Medication is likely not the right solution for you, there are several very helpful books about Adult ADHD that you should check out that could change your life: Taking Charge of Adult ADHD, and, Is it You, Me, or Adult ADHD?
great books

Hey Rob, have you read Taking charge of Adult ADHD? If so, what are your thoughts?

As someone who has recently started figuring out this whole ADHD thing, definitely seek out help for it. There are a ton of really powerful tools and support systems that make a tremendous difference. Especially organizational systems designed for people with executive function deficits (whether that's ADHD or not, doesn't really matter!)

Caddra has an interesting chart here for suggestions: https://caddra.ca/pdfs/Psychosocial_October2016.pdf

I also like Russell Barkley's lectures and books: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BzhbAK1pdPM&list=PLzBixSjmbc...

and

http://www.russellbarkley.org/books.html (especially Taking Charge of Adult ADHD)

And additionally, if you find that these things speak to you, medication makes a tremendous difference. I really can't overstate the degree to which it can change your life.

I'm in the same boat; diagnosed with ADHD-PI (UK, so we don't use the term 'ADD') as an adult. I've improved vastly thanks to medication and good routines but it remains a constant effort, and improvement is a continual process. The book Taking Charge of Adult ADHD by Russell Barkley helped me significantly.

Dealing with Adult A.D.D. is more than just taking medication and "forcing" focus. You have to use your working memory or supplements to it, like a note-pad, to coach yourself about what is the best use of your time. You obviously know that none of these other things is helping get actual project work done.

One thing that has been very helpful for me is counseling. (Also called therapy).
A psychiatrist will prescribe medication, but a psychologist will help you become aware and devise strategies for dealing with behaviors you've described that prevent you from accomplishing meaningful work.

Two books I found immensely helpful are:

Taking Charge of Adult ADHD

and

Is It You, Me, or Adult A.D.D.? Stopping the Roller Coaster When Someone You Love Has Attention Deficit Disorder

By: Gina Pera, Russell Barkley

Good luck

I'm in my 40s and have suffered with undiagnosed ADHD my entire life.

Two days after I suspected I had it I saw my doctor. One month later I was on medication. A few more months and I am in weekly counselling. For me personally, the positive changes from medication and counseling have been dramatic and immediate.

After only 4 months, my coworkers impression of me is starting to shift for the better.

ADHD is a serious mental illness. I'm so thankful that the help I'm getting is working.

"Taking Charge of Adult ADHD" by Barkley, helped me understand ADHD and how I should deal with it.
