I watched "The Last Kingdom" from BBC (which I recommend) and it made me want to know more about 9th century England. So far the book "Alfred the Great: the man who made England" by Justin Pollard has been fantastic if you're into that kind of thing. It's very well researched and historically accurate but not overly dry, Pollard makes a point of not including too many footnotes in the book as many of the more academically targeted books do.

The series "The Last Kingdom" is based on the books by Bernard Cornwell. He also wrote the "Sharpe" books, which were adapted to several TV films (starring Sean Bean). They're set around the Napoleonic Wars, with some of them in India.

The Last Kingdom on Netflix is a pretty decent series about this time. Sort of a non fantasy version of Game of Thrones. I think there are probably a fair bit of historical inaccuracies in there but nevertheless a fascinating time and decent series. I ended up reading up on wikipedia about several of the characters (at least the non fictional ones).
