Robin Sloan is awesome: if you haven't read Mr. Penumbra's 24 Hour Bookstore, it's a really fun and easy read. He works Hadoop into the writing!

Also something I realized only a year after purchasing the book: it's glow in the dark!

No, I just don't think making references for their own sake is particularly clever.

But if you like that kind of joke and you like the show, that's great. It's not something I would judge you as a person for. Heck, I'd be happy to suggest Mr. Penumbra's 24 Hour Bookstore, if you haven't read it already.

One example in the positive column: Robin Sloan has consistently written optimistically about SF, both in Mr. Penumbra's 24 Hour Bookstore, and his new novel, Sourdough.

The pdf of the book is linked to in the article, and after reading a little of it I'm struck by its similarity to "Mr. Penumbra's 24 Hour Bookstore" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mr._Penumbra%27s_24-Hour_Books...

Robin Sloan, the author of "Sourdough" and "Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore" apparently came up with the term Moral Crumple Zones, off the cuff at a WeRobot conference.

This seems like an appropriate place to plug Sourdough: A Novel, by Robin Sloan (who also wrote Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore). It's a really delightful read that lovingly satirizes many aspects of San Francisco's contemporary culture while telling the story of a coder turned baker who is on a mission to teach robotic arms to bake bread.

Robin Sloan (Author of Mr. Penumbra's 24 Hour Bookstore, Julie Rubicon[1]) built something like you describe using a corpus of old sci fi stories ("If I had to offer an extravagant analogy (and I do) I’d say it’s like writing with a deranged but very well-read parrot on your shoulder"):
