The Red Rising series has significant plot points in jupiter and beyond. Fantastic books.

Under the wealthy genetic adonis's will be a caste system of people engineered for specific job roles also of course.

If this sounds like an interesting novel I would recommend Red Rising by Pierce Brown. It explores some of these issues.

The books in the Red Rising trilogy were some of the best that I read this year as well.

On the topic of "Adams Event" and Hitchhikers, I actually find these topics really entertaining from a literary angle. Cave-dwelling post-apoc isn't a type I've done. Does anyone know of any works themed around magnetic breakdown? I've quite liked the Red Rising series which I guess is similar? Bobiverse/Enders Game/Hell Divers etc? Recommendations welcome :)

(I read Three Body Problem + sequels in 2016. The first book I thought was ok. I really liked the second book - The Dark Forest - the Dark Forest theory of the universe I thought was quite interesting)

  * Vagabonding, by Rolf Potts. Shaped my views on hard work and travel.
  * 1984, by George Orwell. Brilliant and terrifying.
  * The Power of Now, by Eckhart Tolle. Overcoming mental pain through consciousness. 
  * Planetwalker, by John Francis. Inspired me to walk and put myself into things more.
  * Pure enjoyment: Snow Crash (Neal Stephenson), Ready Player One (Ernest Cline), Watchmen (Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons), Red Rising trilogy (Pierce Brown).

Honorable mention: The Water Knife (Paolo Bacigalupi).

Three Body Problem (this one's probably going to get mentioned a lot, and it absolutely deserves it). The Collapsing Empire by John Scalzi. Red Rising (series) by Pierce Brown.

I almost gave up on Three Body Problem because it starts off a little slowly and it's difficult to see where the book is going. Absolutely worth it in the end, though. The second two are the kinds of books you can rip through quickly if you've got a little extra reading time over the holidays.

Why all fiction? No matter how much I read about the human mind or current affairs or computer science or quantum physics or ..., there is no deeper, more lasting feeling in my soul than finishing an epic tale that has grabbed every ounce of my attention. So much fun, so many characters and plot twists and emotions and gains and losses. I loved every second reading these books and they have restored my faith in modern writing. Well done.
